Check out the images from our recent 7 Day Trip on the American Angler out of Pt Loma CA.

We are back from our 7 day trip on the AA. The Offshore Grounds, Cedros, Benitez, The Ridge, and Alijos Rocks. Not much on the Tuna, but a Grip of Yellows, and a few Wahoo at the Rocks. The weather was stellar for the entire trip barley getting a touch of spray on the windows of the Wheelhouse.

A whale shark managed to swim into our chumline on the Ridge and swam by to show off her Tan Line!

Good Afternoon Anglers.

June 20th-27th saw the first "Performance Tackle" 8 day of the Year, Including shop owner Marc Higashi and Owner Pro Staffer Sergio Fainsztein of Radio Outdoor Expeditions. As one would expect, this was one of the most epic fishing trip Cedros Island has ever seen, considering the collective talent of this 9 man group. The Biomass at Cedros Island definitely afforded each Angler the opportunity to accomplish some phenomenal mixed bag fishing. Calico's came in the expected quality and quantity. With 100 to 400 fish to 8.5lbs per Angler for the trip. Yellowtail fishing was also fantastic for what would be considered early season anywhere else. Tails to 44 lbs came on everything from YoYo'd Jigs and surface Iron, to Bass rods and Plastic swimbaits. One tanker was even hooked on a Diawa hard jerkbait! Really all species came in as many numbers as you wanted, we could only pull so much! A high quality problem to have your limiting factor be your arms.

Other species caught on this trip included fantastic numbers of Halibut, Barracuda, Bonita, enormous SheepHead, even a few Spotties, Sandies and a nice Grouper on the Plastic! I have never seen any other place in the world where one can sight-fish for SheepHead as Sergio did. On our way back to be dropped back off at Performance Tackle where we were picked up. Anglers commented as to the difficulty of remembering just how many of these fish were caught and released. Awesome!

As for the Hotel. One Angler was heard saying he would be returning for another trip on arrival at the Hotel! Fishing had not even begun yet, as we were on the Island for all of 20 minutes! Imagine eating your dinner cliff side. Watching the waves break, and scanning the area for the fish you are going to be catching. This Hotel as been a long time coming and a Labor of Love. Most Guests on this trip commented that it was nothing like they expected. "You know...not you average Fishing Hotel" as one Angler put it.

As usual. The Pangas and the service from the Captains was unsurpassed. Each member of the Cedros Adventures Staff put in long hard days. Sometimes 10 to 16 hours. Everyone from the Porters, fish cleaners, Captains, Drivers, Maid service, worked hard to ensure a memorable trip for the quests.

Weather was typical June West Coast weather. A little breeze here and there with average temps.

Food!? Forget about it. As always the Staff and Adrian out did themselves with Appetizers each day. Asada, fish from Yellowtail to Whitefish to Black Seabass, RibEye steaks, Lobster, you name it. We even had Birthday cake, as 3 Birthdays came during this trip. Awesome!

Bob,

This is a delayed report of this Toad I got back in March down in San Diego in a "classified" location. I had access to an area where most anglers don't get to fish and they were lickin to say the least. From my time on the boats growing up, I've literally seen 1000's of sandies and never one this big. A few days after I got this one, I popped one off trying to bounce it that was just as big as this one. I let this one go cause I didn't want to kill it, but part of me wonders what it would've gone on the scales. I guess we'll never know. Oh well.

We have had some really good rockfishing so far and our first LINGCOD SPECIAL we ended up with limits of rockfish and we were 4 fish shy of limits of lingcod as well. We are open party lingcod special on the 11th and open party freelance on Tues. thru Thurs. Janet and I were out on the Rogue the last day of March to see if we could get a keeper (hatchery) springer because they really eat well.

Again, our pro guide neighbor, Rick Howard, picked us up early for the one hour drive south to the Rogue. On the way down, we picked up Rick's long time friend and our contractor, Jack Napier, who we had to hardly try to talk into taking a day off and go fishing with us. Launched in the dark and headed for the spot for the day. Arrived at Rick's chosen spot, anchored up and got the rigs in the water. The river was higher than the last time, around 17000 cfs, but the color was pretty good.

Rick decided to go with three rigs with spinner blades and one straight bait. Bait of choice on the Rogue is anchovies which Rick rigs with a Gamakatsu treble in the rear and a Sealy type through the lips with a clip to keep the mouth closed. The treble is attached to a 20# leader with a loop that is needled through one side of the chovy with the front hook on a slider snell to enable pulling on the leader to put a slight curve in the bait to make it spin. When properly rigged, the chovy will spin in the current by itself.

It took a little while before there was any action. The first fish we saw hooked was by a bankie that was barely fifty feet down from us. After they landed the fish we waited a bit before one of the spinner rigs got short bit, then the straight bait went off. Janet grabbed the rod. Rick, Jack and I cleared the other three and we slipped the anchors and went after the fish. Janet got it close where it was ID'ed as a wild, non-keeper and subsequently released. Too bad, as it appeared to be at least 25 lbs.

A little later, the straight bait went off again and away we went with Jack on the fish. This time it was a hatchery about 28# and ended up in the cooler. After a short wait the straight bait got bit for the third time in a row and I got to pull on it for a while with it going under the boat and heading for the beach. A noble but futile effort as this one was also a hatchery of around 30# and got konked and iced.

By this time it was apparent that the spinner blades on the other baits weren't earning their keep, so Rick switched to straight bait all around. A tip here, Rick showed us that the spinner blades slow down the spin of the bait as they deflect the current from around the body of the chovy.

After the switch, a different rod went off and Janet worked on it for a while as it seemed to be pretty big. When it got close we saw that it was a wild one and it was put back. This one was larger than all of the others for the day, maybe close to 35, nuts!

Overall, it was a good day on the river, no rain with sunny afternoon and a couple of the best tasting salmon anywhere in the box.

What's up guys,

I got to fish a few days down at Las Cruces and the yellows were chewin'! The first day was a little tough but we caught a few, and the next two days were pretty epic, Cedros style with bird schools and packs of yellows chasing bait. They were biting the yo yo and the surface jig and were a really nice grade from 25# to 40#+.

We didn't catch any pargo or grouper, but my brother in law. Chip, had a marlin eat his jig about 30' from the boat and it put on a show for a little while.. There was also a big mako cruising around and it would pick off a fish now and then. It was pretty cool to see some guys who had never fished like this before get dragged around the boat by these fish.

after gettin' it done by 10:45, we moved into the shallows to screw off on light tackle and to finally call it a day.

Taking a break from work, Iv'e got time on my hands to hunt bass this spring. Greg joined me for a 6 hour session on Casitas. A weather window between storms, we arrived to find the lake up 4ft. A quick run from the launch- found a stretch of stained shoreline where the bass were chewing. Greg swung a bass on the Champ in 3 minutes. We plucked around a dozen bass off this one stretch of bank - senkos were the ticket. Cool time fishing Greg's backyard lake, time to get you out for some springtime bassin'.

Chucks and Cods on the Aloha Spirit

Hey Gang

We had a great trip out to Santa Cruz Island on the Aloha Spirit out of Channel Islands Sportfishing Oxnard CA. Shawn Steward was at the Wheel and the plan was to make the Long Run to the West end to look at some untouched stones given the new season. The weather was pretty iffy for the trip where I talked to Shawn about the Weather Window we read in the reports heading into the trip. The NOAA Forecasts always look pretty daunting but if you know what to look for in the forecast you can roll the dice and turn out a nice springtime trip. We trusted Shawn and the gamble paid off.

We had a nice ground swell that was building with long periods in between the swells. It shook us at first with the confused wind which turned pretty nice about an hour outside the Nard. We had 14 Anglers with a Limit Day on the Reds and Chucks . Everyone got to pull on a fish pretty much all day long. 51 Degree water made it tough to locate the biters but Shawn showed us he can find the fish! Check out the catches below:

Bob -

We were out on the Rogue River on 04 March with our neighbor guide Rick Howard and his nephew Travis to see if there were more than the one Chinook that Rick had found a couple of days earlier. That fish was a very early spring run Chinook for the Rogue.

After another O-Dark-Thirty start to get on the river and to "the spot", we anchored up and backtrolled plugs and bait. It took a little while until Janet hooked and landed a nice wild steelhead. A little later Travis got into a NICE wild springer which took him a while to land as it got out into the current and took a bunch line in the process. After a bit of a wait, I was onto a wild springer as well and got it into the net.

Unfortunately, for Travis and myself, you can not keep wild spring kings, so, they had to be released. They are beautiful fish as you can see in the photos. And, the best eating of all salmon because of their higher fat content. You can keep hatchery fish which have the adipose fin clipped.

We will be trying again soon as the run picks up into March and April.

I spent some time at the show meeting with Corey Shiotaki Director of the Manzanar Fishing Club movie. The film project is coming close to completion where some funds are still required to finish off the movie. A short segment and exhibit was showing in the Arena area of the fishing show. Pretty amazing how a couple phone calls, emails, and Facebook posts on the Asian Retro page got some folks together to help lend Corey and Writer Richard Imamura.

Hats and Tshirts were offered at the show in exchange for donations to help complete the movie. They are targeting on completing the movie later this year.

I got clued in on a really movie project by some good fishing buds. The movie is about the Manzanar interment camp and how some learned who to forget about camp life by fishing the waters in the area.

I want to help spread the good word about the movie pro0ject. Bart Hall was kind enough to provide a big space in the Arena area for the upcoming Long Beach Fred Hall Fishing Show.

Dust off the Irons and Fly Gimmicks for the COD Opener just around the corner (March 1). The Aloha Spirit is doing a little boat off season boat work with Shawn getting the boat ready for 2011. Come check him out at the upcoming Fred Hall Show in Long Beach and book a trip. Shawn runs a great operation out of Channel Islands Sportfishing.

I hit up Anacapa last Fri and yesterday, Friday was pretty good fishing, I got 2 out of 4, one pulled the hook and another absolutely smoked me on 50#, straight into the island. Yesterday I went out for a 1/2 day, crappy 15 kt SE wind made it tough to fish, but I managed one that I think is my biggest for Anacapa.

“We hit a grand slam!” noted the report from Royal Polaris November 5. “Our morning started out slow as we looked at several different spots of porpoise only to come up short, but with lots of time left in the day we would persist. Shortly thereafter we found the mother lode and we went from zero to sixty in a matter of seconds! Large crashing tuna 10 feet from the stern would be the norm as we settled in for a drift that lasted all afternoon. We had a day that was very reminiscent of the great big fish action we were blessed with in 2005. Many of our anglers achieved their personal best on this fine day.

Top Anglers: Paul Kaufman, 278; Bill Seigel, 258; Marcus Bondy, 256; Matt Miller, 230; Tim Whelan Jr., 227; Mike Marx, 224; Brad Fugate, 217 and Bill Pargee, 215.

“Our action coming by way of kite and fly-lining, with both squid and sardines. We had eight fish over 200 pounds, with eight more from 180 to 199 pounds, and seven more from 130 to 180. We'll let the pictures speak for themselves. Enjoy the photos and get ready for fall as the action has officially begun. We will try for a repeat tomorrow, however it will be a challenge, one that we are anxiously awaiting.”

I'm back, wehad a good trip with excellent weather. The wahoo were around but weren't biting that well, except for dorado and some yellowfin that you could almost kayak to from Las Cruces. We got 7 wahoo for the trip, most were 25-35#, a few bigger. Kinda slow but way better than nothing. The shore/kayak fishing was epic for dorado, jacks, roosters etc.

Weather overcast ,water calm. We headed down the coast to the short banks, 240’ deep- pulled up reds, chuckles, grouper, good taco meat. I get a good bite -strained to pull it off the bottom. Up comes a ling, nice keeper about 10#s. Capt Dave gaffs it for me. Turns out to be Jackpot fish, 10 other lings come up but all short. Fished shallow at the deephole county line in 60’ later for more ,sheephead, calico bass, more reds and johnnies. Tipped the crew the jackpot $. Taco time.

Here is the fishing report from Marlon from the Tayacu, good fishing reported with the water level still coming down and is rated at medium levels. Number of catches are coming up every week. Some nice fish landed this week 16 peacocks over 20lb.

This week big fish report:

2- 25lb

2- 24lb

7- 23lb

5-between 20 and 22lb.

11-between17 to 19

77-between 10-16

713fish under 10

Water level: rated medium, water is slowly going down.

Conditions: rated good to very good

Here are the big fish stats for far this season.

Ive had Mike set up my rig for the last 2 trips Ive been on and guess what? 2 jackpots in a row!

I went out sunday and came back on tues morning (1.5 day trip) off of H&M on the First Strike and there were only 5 bluefins caught. I won with a 28lbs+....

Good fight but the fish were picky as hell....
